Siren Talbot is a woman haunted—by love, by loss, and by a memory she can’t quite reach. When the man she’s about to marry, Carver, suddenly disappears under mysterious circumstances, her world shatters. A spell or force has temporarily erased part of her memory, shielding her from the trauma. For three years, she lives with that void, trying to heal, trying to move on. And eventually, she does—or so she thinks—when she marries Patrick, the seemingly perfect man who moves in next door.

Most of the story follows Siren and Patrick’s life together before the truth begins to unravel. At first, I was completely drawn into their relationship. Their bond seemed full of warmth and devotion. But slowly, subtle cracks began to show: Patrick’s need to always know where Siren was, his flashes of impatience, and—most suspiciously—his disdain for her cat, Mr. Pounce. These red flags made me uneasy, and it was in those moments that Siren would begin to remember Carver, the man she lost.

Here’s the thing—I didn’t find Carver very intriguing at first. Patrick, on the other hand, had a magnetic energy that pulled me in. He was exciting, mysterious, intense… and I completely fell for him. So when the truth came out and Siren realized it was all a lie, I felt genuinely heartbroken. The author did such a great job making readers experience that same sense of betrayal alongside the main character.

Even though Siren shared a real connection with Patrick, her heart had always belonged to Carver. Patrick served as a distraction—a powerful, consuming one—but not the real thing. The paranormal elements in this book are strong and seamless, adding suspense, mystery, and emotional depth. I never quite knew what was coming next, which kept me hooked the entire time.

I also have to give a shoutout to Mr. Pounce—Siren’s arrogant, charming cat—who totally stole every scene he was in. (And if you know me, you know I appreciate a well-written animal character!)

Jennifer Melzer’s storytelling is fluid, atmospheric, and emotionally rich. She did a phenomenal job making me care about these characters, even the ones I probably shouldn’t have trusted. If you enjoy romance with a paranormal twist, compelling characters, and emotional roller coasters, this book is for you. I’ll definitely be adding more of Melzer’s work to my TBR pile.
